Oldcastle Players United in 1 - 0 win over Harmon Rangers
North East Football League Division 2
Oldcastle United 1 - 0 Harmon Rangers
The Blues kept up their winning run in October with a very hard fought win over Drogheda side Harmon Rangers in Gilson Park. The goal came as early as the fifth minute of the match when Alan McCann tricked his way into the Rangers box and was taken down inside the area where match official Camillus Perry pointed to the spot. Cj Healy stepped up to fire the ball past Dean Mahon. Healy went close soon after when he was put through on goal but he fired high and over. Alan McCann was next to try his luck when teeing up a shot but it landed on the green on the pitch & putt course, he might of finished -2 on the course from his shots on goal !! Healy then was guilty of trying a shot on goal when he could of squared it to McCann who made a lovely run into the box. Jonathan Boylan set up a one two with Thomas O Reilly only for O Reilly to see his right foot volley go across goal when only the keeper in front of him, McCann was alert at the back post but fired the ball into the side netting. The second half saw Harmon go in search for an equaliser but the Defence of Oldcastle stood tall, clearing their lines on many occasions. Boylan nearly doubled the lead for the blues when Thomas O Reilly found Cj Healy on the left, his cross was met at the back post by Boylan but Mahon made a world class stop. Ten minutes later Healy turned from attacker to defender as he cleared off the line when defending a corner. Harmon tried in vain to get into the match but were twarted time and time again by unsung hero Brian Caffrey, who tireless work protects the back four. Alan McCann then nearly grabbed a goal of the season contender when he beat four players with the ball before firing a low shot which should of nestled into the bottom corner of the net if the goal was three or four inches bigger. Rangers pushed late on for that goal and thought they had grabbed it when Basha Nagaberry headed towards goal following another corner kick, but Healy once again proved vital when clearing his effort from the goal line. The blues held on for a third win in succession and gives them their first official points of the campaign.
